At ILS, many students know what it’s like to juggle academics, extracurriculars, and sleep—and for those involved in cheerleading, the challenge can be especially intense. Between early morning practices, after-school conditioning, and weekend competitions, cheerleaders often find themselves racing against the clock just to keep up with homework and study time.
Sophomore Brianna Puglisi, who has been cheering since middle school can relate.
“Some nights I don’t get home until 8 or 9, and then I still have homework. It’s hard, but I try to plan my time carefully so I don’t fall behind.”
She added that cheer has taught her discipline and time management, even if it sometimes means sacrificing late-night relaxation.
Freshman Mia Jolie shared how she is adjusting to high school life while participating in cheer.
“I didn’t realize how much time cheer and homework would take together. I’ve had to give up some late-night socializing just to get enough sleep,” she said. “But I really love being part of the team, so it feels worth it.”
Sophomore Mia Russomano, balancing AP classes and cheer, emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy schedule.
“I use a strict schedule and try to prioritize sleep because I know if I’m too tired, I can’t focus in class or at practice. It’s tough, but it helps me stay on top of everything,” she said.
Teachers and coaches at ILS stress that students need to find a balance to avoid burnout. They encourage students to plan ahead, set priorities, and listen to their bodies when it comes to rest. Some students have even started using planners or digital calendars to track assignments, practice schedules, and competitions to make sure nothing falls through the cracks.
For the cheerleaders at ILS success isn’t just about nailing stunts or earning high grades, it’s about learning how to manage time, stay healthy, and balance the many demands of high school life. While it isn’t always easy, students like Brianna, Mia Jolie, and Mia Russomano show that with planning and determination, it’s possible to thrive both in the classroom and on the cheer mat.
