In early February 2026, the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of the Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, sparked a massive criminal investigation in Tucson, Arizona. Guthrie was last seen on the evening of January 31 after a family dinner, but she was reported missing the following morning when she didn’t attend a church service. Law enforcement quickly shifted the case from a missing person case to a criminal probe after discovering signs of a struggle and blood on the front porch of her home. Because Guthrie has limited mobility and requires daily medication, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated that she could not have left the residence unassisted, leading investigators to conclude she was forcibly taken.
As the search enters its third week, authorities have released security footage of a masked individual wearing gloves seen outside her home around the time her doorbell camera and heart pacemaker app were disconnected. Forensic teams have found a glove approximately two miles from the house that matches the ones the suspect wore, and it contained the DNA of an unknown male, but when tested to unfamiliar DNA found in the home, did not match.
Many students have different opinions on what they would do in Savannah Guthries’ shoes.
Sophomore Ximena Guerrero, a member of SALTT, said, “I would tell my co-workers what is going on, and to see if they can help me by spreading the news to the public, like missing person flyers.”
Another sophomore, Connor Heilemann, said, “I feel really bad for what Savannah is going through right now. If my mom went missing in that manner I would do the same as Savannah. I would step away from work for a while and keep advocating to bring her back.”
Another tenth grader, Alejandro Ferris of the ILS Football team said, “I would use my resources like my fans to help me try and find her ,or I would ask around my family when the last time people saw her was and try to find her myself. I would also have the police involved.”
Savannah Guthrie has remained off the air for the near future, staying in Arizona to support the investigation and stay with her family. A crime this impactful can make you really appreciate your loved ones while you’re with them.
