For many high school students, the idea of college can feel distant and unfamiliar. However, Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies offers a summer program designed to bridge that gap. Known as the Hoya Summer Program, it allows students to explore subjects not typically offered in high school while experiencing the independence and responsibility of college life.
The program provides a wide range of courses, including personal branding, marketing, law, medicine, and engineering. Students attend classes taught by college-level professors and often participate in hands-on projects, discussions, and presentations. In some courses, students even work in real-world scenarios, helping them develop practical skills. Beyond academics, participants live in dorms on Georgetown’s campus, eat in dining halls, and get a feel for daily college routines in Washington, D.C.
According to Georgetown alumni, programs like this can have a lasting impact on students’ futures. Experiencing college life early can help students feel more prepared and confident when the time comes to apply and attend. It also gives students a clearer idea of what they might want to study in the future.
“As an alumni of Georgetown University, I consider this a great opportunity to experience the unique culture this school has, since it is highly international because its location in the US capital,” Georgetown University alumnus, Mr. Patricio Baez.
In addition to academics, the program encourages personal growth. Students meet peers across the country and even internationally, building connections and friendships. Being in a new environment also pushes students to become more independent, as they are responsible for managing their time, navigating campus, and balancing both academic and social activities.

“Even though I am far beyond attending college, I have always been interested in Georgetown Univesity. This program can give me the opportunity in a few years to understand in depth the system and academics of my dream school,” said seventh grader, Nicolas Baez.
Overall, the Hoya Summer Program offers high school students a unique opportunity to step into a college environment before they officially begin that journey. By combing academics, independence, and real-world exposure, it prepares students for both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
