Social media has become a major part of everyday life for teenagers. Now, Meta is introducing new rules that could change how teens use the social platforms X and Instagram. The changes focus on screen time, nighttime use, school hours, and how teens interact with content online.
One of the biggest changes is its new two-hour daily limit for X and Instagram. The limit applies to the total time spent on both apps. Teens can turn off the limit with permission from a parent. Meta will also introduce night mode, which blocks access between midnight and 6 am by default.
These changes could affect how teenagers managedtheir time online they They could also encourage students to create a healthier balance between social media and their everyday lives
“Social media can take up a lot of our time, so I think these changes could help teens create a better balance between being online and being present in real life,” said enior Carlos Morera.
Meta is also introducing school mode, which will mute most notifications between 8 am and 3 pm on school days. Teens will also receive direct messages and important safety or security alerts. The goal is reduced distractions to give students fewer reasons to constantly check their phones during school.
“The new limits could help students spend less time distracted by social media and more time focused on school and other parts of their lives,” commented senior Luna Morales.
Spending less time online could make it easier for students to focus on schoolwork, activities, and time with friends. Nonetheless, the impact will depend on how teenagers respond to the new limits.
The changes also raise questions about mental health. Social media can sometimes cause teenagers to compare themselves with others especially when edited posts create unrealistic expectations. Giving teens more opportunities to step away from their screens could help reduce some of that pressure.
