The Miami Marlins’ hopes of making the playoffs have come to an end after a season filled with ups and downs. Miami fought throughout the year to stay in the National League Wild Card race, but a difficult September made it harder for the team to keep up with the teams ahead of them.
The Marlins entered September still believing they had a chance. At the beginning of the month, Miami was only a few games behind the final Wild Card spot.The team knew it needed to win important games against teams competing for the playoffs. However, the Marlins struggled during the most important part of the season.
One of the biggest setbacks came against a huge loss against the New York Mets. Miami was swept in a three-game series, including a wild 15-14 loss in the final game.The loss dropped the Marlins to 72-75 and made their path to the playoffs much more difficult and near impossible.
The Marlins did show some fight after the difficult series. They took two games from the Los Angeles Dodgers, including a dramatic 6-4 win after Agustin Ramirez hit a walk-off home run. Miami also defeated Arizona 4-2 in extra innings on September 15.
Even with those wins, the Marlins could not overcome the ground they lost during the season. Their playoff hopes eventually disappeared, ending their goal of returning to the postseason.
Although the season did not end the way Miami wanted, the team showed plenty of young talent and gave fans exciting moments. The Marlins will now look toward the future and try to use what they learned this season to come back stronger next year.
