Riding a bike is a common way for people to exercise, travel and spend time outdoors. However, cyclists face many risks when riding near cars, especially on busy streets where drivers and cyclists have to share the road.
One recent accident has brought more attention to the importance of bike safety. Former ILS student Dr. Gilbert Beauperthuy-Rojas, a 63-year-old orthopedic surgeon with HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on the Rickenbacker Causeway near Key Biscayne. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital following the accident.
Although the accident happened on the Rickenbacker Causeway, bike safety is an issue that affects cyclists everywhere. Drivers may not always notice cyclists, while cyclists also have to be aware of vehicles around them.
One important part of bike safety is making sure drivers and cyclists respect each other’s space. Staying in the correct lanes, paying attention to traffic, and following road rules can help prevent accidents.
“As a driver on the Key Biscayne Bridge, I feel like neither drivers or cyclists respect their lanes, and that can be really dangerous,” commented senior Micaela Tarazona.
Cyclists can be especially vulnerable because they do not have the same protection as people inside vehicles. Wearing a helmet, using bike lanes when available, and making sure drivers can see them are some ways cyclists can stay safer on the road.
“I ride my bike a lot, and I’m always scared of being hit,” added senior Eva Dusvitch.
Drivers also have an important responsibility when sharing the road with cyclists. They should stay alert, check their surroundings before turning or changing lanes, and give cyclists enough space when passing. Cyclists should also follow traffic laws, stay aware of nearby vehicles and avoid sudden movements.
The accident involving alumnus Dr. Beauperthuy-Rojas serves as a reminder of why bike safety matters. Whether someone rides a bike every day or only occasionally, both drivers and cyclists need to pay attention and respect the rules of the road. Small safety precautions can help reduce the risk of accidents and make the roads safer for everyone.
