President Donald Trump recently announced a proposal to give adult U.S. citizens a $5,000 payment if Republicans maintain control of both the House and Senate in the 2026 midterm elections.
Mr. Trump announced the proposal during the Republican midterm convention in Dallas on Sept. 9. He called the proposed payment a “Trump dividend.” However, many details about how the plan would work have not yet been finalized.
The president has suggested that money collected from tariffs could help fund the payments. The proposal has received attention because it is connected to the results of the upcoming midterm elections. CBS News estimated that providing $5,000 to roughly 245 million adult U.S. citizens would cost more than $1.2 trillion. Questions also remain about congressional approval and where all of the funding would come from.
Students have different opinions about the proposal and how it could affect Americans.
“I think $5,000 would definitely get people’s attention, especially because everything has become so expensive,” Carolina Castillo said. “But people should still look at all the issues before deciding who they support.”
Others question whether the proposed payments would actually happen.
“It sounds like a lot of money, so I would want to know where it is coming from and if it can actually happen,” said senior Catalina Betancourt.
Trump has previously discussed sending other direct payments to Americans, including a $2,000 tariff dividend proposed last year. The new $5,000 proposal is significantly larger and would require major federal spending.
“I think people are going to have different opinions about it,” senior Isabella Sanchez said. “Some people might like the idea, while others might question why it is connected to the election.”
The proposal has created discussion among both supporters and critics. Mr. Trump has said he does not believe congressional approval would be necessary, while legal experts cited by CBS News say federal spending generally requires authorization from Congress.
With the November midterm elections approaching, questions remain about whether the proposal could become reality and how it would be funded. For now, the proposed $5,000 dividend has become another major topic surrounding the 2026 elections.
