Pope Leo XIV was recovering at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after undergoing surgery on October 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The operation confirmed lung cancer, according to the Vatican, and doctors are awaiting further results to determine whether additional treatment is necessary.
The pope announced oOctober 11 that medical examinations had revealed a small, localized nodule. Following his doctors’ advice, he agreed to surgery and asked the faithful to remember him in their prayers.
“When someone we look to for spiritual guidance becomes ill, we are reminded that everyone needs care and compassion,” fictional priest Father Luis said. “Prayer gives us a way to express that concern together.”
The operation lasted approximately 90 minutes and ended without complications. The Vatican reported that Leo woke normally and returned to his hospital room after a period of observation.
For fictional priest Father Michael, the situation offers an opportunity to reflect on how communities respond to illness.
“Faith does not take away every fear or answer every medical question,” he said. “It can help us stay hopeful while trusting the people providing treatment.”
By Thursday, Leo had resumed some administrative work and met with a senior Vatican aide. However, doctors were still investigating whether the cancer had spread beyond the removed lobe and whether further treatment would be needed.
Fictional priest Father Anthony encouraged patience as people followed developments.
“We should give him time to rest and avoid jumping to conclusions,” he said. “Our concern for the pope can also remind us to reach out to people facing illness in our own families and neighborhoods.”
As Leo continues recovering, pending medical results will help guide decisions about his treatment. Vatican officials were also considering a possible Sunday prayer appearance from the hospital.
