Halloween used to be one of the most exciting nights of the year. Kids filled the streets with costumes, houses were covered in decorations, and neighbors handed out candy. But as the years pass, some teenagers feel that the holiday is losing the excitement they remember from childhood. Streets that once felt crowded now seem much quieter.
“Halloween used to be so much more fun when we were little. Everyone would decorate their houses, and the streets would be packed with kids. Now it just feels like people don’t care as much anymore,” said Maria Carroll.
One reason Halloween feels different is that teenagers celebrate it in new ways. Instead of trick-or-treating, some choose parties, movies, or hanging out at home. Fewer decorated houses can also make neighborhoods feel less welcoming to younger kids looking for candy.
“I remember being so excited to go trick-or-treating every year, and now I barely see anyone outside. It’s sad because Halloween used to bring everyone together,” said Carolina Castillo.
Social media may also play a part in this change. Many people spend time planning costumes and taking pictures to post online. There is nothing wrong with that, but some teens miss the simple fun of walking around with friends and seeing how creative their neighbors could be. Some also remember seeing neighbors sitting outside, playing Halloween music, and making their front yards look spooky.
“I feel like Halloween is more about costumes and posting pictures now instead of actually having fun. I miss when everyone would go all out and really get into the Halloween spirit,” said Mia Casanueva.
Halloween is not disappearing completely. Families still carve pumpkins, watch scary movies, and decorate their homes. However, the way people celebrate is changing as they grow older. For teenagers who remember crowded sidewalks and full candy bags, bringing back a little neighborhood spirit could make Halloween feel special again.
