lLS Spring Sports Continuing to Workout
April 6, 2020
Instead of suiting up and competing for wins and championships, the Spring Sports at ILS find themselves at home hoping that their season can be salvaged.
With all Miami-Dade County schools remaining closed until May 1st (as of now), one can only hope that the spring sports season is not canceled because of COVID-19.
To prepare for whatever spring season may be salvaged, coaches and players have continued to prepare their teams for competition.
“The team’s are doing their best considering the circumstances. Everyone is really just trying to make the best of it. Trying to stay active and ready so just in case we get to come back in May, we will be able to have some games or activities for them,” said Head Athletic Director Nicholas Fernandez.
The Baseball team continues to work out individually. Junior pitcher Sebastian Paz works out on a day-to-day basis and sends his coach videos and pictures on what he worked on.
As for the ILS Track Team, coaches have continued to give out weekly schedules for the athletes’ workouts. “The objective of the workouts are to maintain form and not to lose it”, said Cerdeiras.
”There are two main objectives we coaches want to accomplish, and they are to keep the morale high and to establish a workout that was practical to the reality our country is facing,” says Head Trainer and Track and Field Coach Eddie Cerdeiras.
As Head Trainer at ILS, Cerdeiras recommends athletes to keep the body fit so they can maintain a healthy immune system. However, he recommends for athletes not to stress the immune system, which is exactly why he emphasizes maintaining form when working out.
Last Friday, Coach Fernandez set up a zoom meeting with the track team. “We had 40+ teammates, friends, and coaches all talking about their situations and work out ideas. It was really great to see.”
The Spring Sports teams at ILS continue to stay in touch so they can continue to stay physically active and reinforce their skills.
“We have also been encouraging them [ILS Athletes] to lean on each other during this time and to push and challenge each other to stay physical and mentally healthy. We are all in this together!”
