Isaiah 25:4: “For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat; for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall.”

February 6 2023, two catastrophic disasters, a 7.8 magnitude followed by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, struck major parts of Turkey and Syria, leaving 1.05 million homeless, more than 40,000 and still counting lives confirmed lost, and more than 80,000 wounded. Thousands of buildings collapsed being this the second quake big enough to tear down thousands more. Many women and children are now being sheltered in temporary tents, and desperately need basic necessities to survive the cold, rigid conditions they are enduring. The death toll is expected to rise as aftershocks and tremors ripple through the neighboring countries.

Temperatures in some areas fell to near freezing overnight, putting more people in danger who are homeless or living under rubble. Civilians are working together to dig people from the rubble while rescue services are underway, but due to severe weather conditions, it is harder to get to everyone. We need to work together for our community to help rebuild these peoples’ lives.

“Let us so conduct ourselves that anyone we are dealing with may leave us satisfied. Let us make friends with everyone who speaks with us. We must do good to all. Therefore, let us be courteous with strangers; rich or poor, they expect it. In fact, those who are quite poor expect it more than others.” -St. John Bosco
