With his unforgettable voice, dramatic expressions, and talent for playing characters that were anything but ordinary, Tim Curry became one of Hollywood’s most memorable entertainers. From a wild scientist in The Rocky Horror Picture Show to a terrifying clown in It, Curry built a career that stretched across theater, movies, television, and voice acting. The legendary British actor died August 25, 2026, at age 80 in Los Angeles, California.
Curry was born April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall, England. He began performing on the London stage in the late 1960s, including a role in the musical Hair. His career took a major turn when he played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show on stage. In 1975, he brought the character to the big screen in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
With his outlandish makeup, powerful singing, and fearless personality, Curry turned Frank-N-Furter into a character audiences would never forget. Although the movie was not an immediate hit, midnight screenings helped it become a cult classic. More than 50 years later, fans still dress up, sing along, and celebrate the film.
But Rocky Horror was only the beginning. In 1982, Curry appeared in Annie as the villainous Rooster Hannigan. He later starred in Legend as the dark and powerful Lord of Darkness. In 1985, he showed his comedic talent as the dramatic butler Wadsworth in Clue, a role that remains one of his most entertaining performances.
In 1990, Curry frightened a new generation as Pennywise the clown in the television miniseries It. His unsettling voice and strange smile made the character a horror icon. He also appeared in Muppet Treasure Island as Long John Silver, proving that he could move between comedy, fantasy, horror, and adventure with ease.
“His role as Pennywise is probably what stands out to me the most,” said junior Matteo Cupello. “He made that character feel so real and creepy, and it shows how talented he was at making every role his own.”
Curry returned to the stage in 2005 as King Arthur in the Broadway musical Spamalot, earning a Tony Award nomination. He also worked in voice acting, lending his recognizable voice to animated shows and video games. Even after suffering a major stroke in 2012, he continued performing through voice work and special appearances.
“Tim Curry had such a long career, and I think it is impressive how many different types of characters he played,” said junior Brianna Puglisi. “He was more than just a horror actor. He was a singer, a theater performer, and someone who made a lasting impact on entertainment.”
Curry’s legacy lives on through the movies, music, theater, and fans who continue to celebrate his work. Whether he was making audiences laugh, scream, or sing, Curry brought a style that belonged completely to him.
