DC Studios has introduced a different type of comic book movie with Clayface, a horror film based on one of Batman’s well-known villains. The movie opened in U.S. theaters October 23, 2026, and finished its opening weekend at the top of the domestic box office. It earned around $24 million in the United States and Canada.
The film also performed well internationally, bringing in approximately $19 million from other countries. This brought its worldwide opening total to about $43 million. The movie played in 3,458 theaters across the United States and Canada, showing that it had a wide release.
”I watched it back in Colombia with my friends,” said sophomore David Sierra.
Clayface stars Tom Rhys Harries and is directed by James Watkins. Unlike many superhero movies that focus on action and large battles, this film takes a horror approach. It gives DC Studios a chance to attract viewers who enjoy suspenseful movies as well as comic book stories.
”I was really excited because I really like horror movies,” said sophomore Devin Ampudia.
The movie reportedly had a production budget of around $40 million to $44 million. Its opening weekend brought in nearly as much as that budget worldwide. However, the studio will need to earn more money because theaters receive part of the ticket sales, and advertising costs also affect a movie’s profits.
Audience reactions have also been encouraging. The film received an A-minus CinemaScore, which measures how moviegoers rate a film after watching it. This suggests that many people who saw Clayface enjoyed the experience.
Another interesting part of the movie is how it expands the DC universe by giving a villain his own story. This could open the door for more films that explore lesser-known characters and different genres, giving audiences something new to experience.
”I forgot it was a DC movie because of how scary it was,’’ said sophomore Jacob Fleitas.
With its strong opening and different style, Clayface could become an important release for DC Studios. Its performance over the next few weeks will help determine whether it can continue attracting audiences and become a financial success.
