Alejandro Escudero is a high school student from Miami, Florida, and a member of the Class of 2027 at Immaculata-La Salle High School. He has been sailing since he was seven-years-old and is now the captain of his school’s sailing team. Sailing has been a big part of his life for many years and has helped him grow as a person. He currently sails both a 470 and a C420, which has given him experience with different boats and helped him improve his skills.
Through sailing, Alejandro has learned the importance of discipline, teamwork, communication, and responsibility. Sailing also teaches him how to stay calm and make quick decisions when things do not go as planned. He has learned that being a good sailor is not just about knowing how to control a boat, you also have to communicate with your teammate, pay attention to the conditions, and work together. These skills have helped him become more confident and focused outside of sailing, too.
“Alejandro is incredibly dedicated to sailing. You can really see how much time and effort he puts into improving,” commented Luna Morales.
Besides sailing, Alejandro likes building and fixing things. He enjoys figuring out how things work, especially when it comes to boats. He likes working with his hands, solving problems, and finding ways to make things function better. His interest in boats and building has also made him interested in engineering, technology, and marine science.
“Alejandro is also incredibly talented in art. His creativity and attention to detail really show in everything he creates,” said senior and classmate Eva Dusvitch.
In the summer of 2027, Alejandro will travel to Poland to compete in the 470 Worlds, an international sailing competition. This will give him the chance to compete against sailors from different countries and test his skills at a higher level. He is also excited about traveling to a new country, experiencing a different culture, and meeting other sailors from around the world.
As Alejandro looks toward college, he hopes to continue sailing while studying something related to engineering, boats, or marine science. He wants to keep improving as a sailor while also learning more about something he has always enjoyed: understanding how things work and building things. Sailing and his interest in hands-on projects continue to influence what he wants to do in the future.
