At first glance, Buddy looks more like a children’s television show rather than a horror movie. With its colorful sets, costumes, and a giant orange unicorn as the main character, the movie may seem innocent at first. However, as the story continues, the playful world begins to become much darker.
Released in theaters in August 2026 and directed by Casper Kelly, Buddy is a horror-comedy based around a children’s TV show called It’s Buddy!. The show includes Buddy, a giant orange unicorn, and a group of children who sing, dance, and do a bunch of activities together. When one of the children begins to question the world around them, things start to get worse.
“I thought the movie was going to be more funny than scary because of how colorful everything looked, but once things started getting weird, it changed the way I looked at Buddy,” junior Antonio Tejada said.
One thing that makes Buddy different is how it mixes horror and comedy. Some scenes are strange and funny, while others are meant to make the audience uncomfortable. The movie is not like a typical horror movie which can make it unpredictable. The bright colors and characters continue throughout the movie even as the story becomes darker.
Another part that makes the movie stand out is the way it uses things that would normally be seen in a children’s show to create horror. The bright setting and friendly characters make the darker moments more unexpected. Instead of changing the entire appearance of the movie when things go wrong, it continues to have the colorful style that was shown in the beginning.
“I like how different the movie was because it wasn’t a regular horror movie; the whole children’s show made it more interesting and kept me wondering what was going to happen next,” senior Luna Morales said.
Although Buddy may not be the type of horror movie everyone likes, its peculiar style is what makes it memorable. By mixing horror and comedy, the movie takes something that seems innocent and turns it into the opposite. For viewers who enjoy horror movies that are strange and unpredictable, Buddy is a movie that stands out from the usual horror films.
