Community service doesn’t always have to feel like work. On Saturday, October 24, students from Immaculata-La Salle High School’s Environmental Club spent their morning kayaking through Biscayne Bay, collecting trash, and helping keep the environment clean while having fun with friends.
Throughout the morning, students kayaked around the bay and worked together to remove trash stuck beneath the mangroves. The cleanup gave students a chance to get outside, enjoy the water, and make a difference in their community.
Environmental Club president Julie Alemany shared how much she enjoyed the event.
“It’s a fun activity to do with friends; we had a blast!!” she said.
While the main goal was to clean up the bay, the event also brought students together. Between kayaking through the water and helping each other collect trash, students were able to enjoy themselves while doing something good for the environment.
Environmental Club vice president Ethan Cordisco also talked about his experience.
“It was so cool to go into the mangroves and pick up so much trash,” he said.
The cleanup also helped students see how much trash can end up in the water, and why it is important to take care of places like Biscayne Bay. Even small actions, like picking up trash, can help protect the environment.
The Environmental Club is about more than just cleaning up the environment. It gives students opportunities to spend time with friends, participate in different activities, and get involved in their community.
Events like the kayak cleanup show that helping the environment can actually be something students look forward to. For anyone interested in trying something new, meeting people, or making a difference, the Environmental Club is a great way to get involved at ILS.
