ILS’s STEAM Program recently invited students from all grades to explore what a STEAM class experience is like. The STEAM program at ILS increases STEAM literacy for all students. It nurtures active, lifelong learners preparing them to be responsible, contributing members of society and global citizens who can identify and use the connections these disciplines to help shape their lives and those of their community.
STEAM classes include Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math. Students were able to give CPR, identify different fingerprints, program robots using iPads, view the behind-the-scenes of LTV, explore editing in digital arts, and much more. The program really sets a focus for what students would want to pursue in the future. It has many benefits. For example, the Engineering focus provides exposure to career skills in various engineering fields. The course of study begins with Introduction to Engineering, which provides students with a foundation of knowledge and technically-oriented experiences in the study of applied engineering and its effect on everyday life. Senior Stefano Giugovaz has taken the engineering program.
“It has taught me teamwork skills, how to work with circuits, how to design models on softwares, and how to code.”
The legal program’s focus provides students with an opportunity to become familiar with legal concepts, legal institutions, and the legal process. It is designed to help students understand and analyze the policies and practices of the legal system. Junior Gabriella Del Rio is on this track.
“I love this program because it’s something I want to pursue in the future– it helps me learn what part of law I want to go into.”
The Health Science focus provides exposure to aspects of the medical field. In partnership with Mercy Hospital, students complete quarterly rotations and volunteer hours at the hospital. Senior Maria Arena is a part of the Health Science track.
“This program has given me a strong foundation of what I need in my future career.”
The Health Science program is not the only one that has a partnership as the Global Business Leadership division gives students an opportunity to earn up to 12 college dual-enrollment credits through Miami-Dade College. Global Business Leadership is focused on ensuring students expand their global business mindset, business knowledge, professional skills, and ethical frameworks. Senior Francesca Abdo is a member of this sector.
“It’s taught me the fundamentals that I need not only to run a business but the funding that has to go into it. I’ve developed business skills such as how to do a sales pitch and the principles of accounting at a very young age.”
The ILS STEAM program gives students a huge opportunity to learn what they love and to set a strong foundation for them in the near future.
“Freshmen and sophomore students in the STEAM Health Science Focus had an opportunity to discuss various medical professions and the process of applying to medical school with students from Nova Southeastern University’s Latino Medical Student Association. ILS has partnered with NSU LMSA to create a mentorship program called METAS – Medical Students Encouraging and Teaching Aspiring Students.👩⚕️👨⚕️ #goroyals #ilssteam,” a recent social media post from ILS STEAM Director, Dr. Rebecca Shaw.
