Indoor cycling, also referred to as spinning, has become one of the hottest fitness trends in the New Year. Spinning gets your blood pumping and makes you drip with sweat. In indoor cycling classes, instructors guide you through different methods of cycling which include uphill climbs, “runs,” and recovery periods that involve slow pedaling. Senior Gabriella Chong enjoys her cycling classes and goes regularly to SoulCycle.

“I love spinning because it is a great way to do cardio without having to run. SoulCycle is super uplifting and a convenient way to exercise and burn fat.”

Instructors choose music that will match with the different parts of the class. Some even have themed classes such as early 2000’s hits and Taylor Swift vs Beyoncé. Instructors motivate participants throughout the class by saying positive phrases to keep them going. Depending on the class, spinning classes range from 45 to 60 minutes. Senior Eugenia Paris has also had an amazing experience with indoor cycling.

“I love cycling because it makes exercise fun. I also like how I can control the resistance on the bike based on what my focus for the workout is,” she explained.

Cycling has a wide range of health benefits. Consistent spinning can improve the lungs, heart, and blood circulation which can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Because cycling is a cardio exercise, it can strengthen muscles in the heart and reduce blood fat levels. Spinning can also promote cognitive function by boosting blood flow and oxygen to the brain. Senior Natalia Davila is thinking of giving cycling a go.

“I have never gone cycling, but I would love to try it because it seems like a thrilling and fun way to get my workouts in,” she said.

Pedal your way to a happier and healthier you by spinning in 2024.
