The People’s Choice Awards, also known as PCAs, date back to 1975 when they used Gallup Polls to determine the winners. They were created by Bob Stivers, an entertainment editor at People Magazine back then, to give the public power and voice to recognize celebrities and entertainment they loved, unlike most industry-driven award shows. This annual event is one of the longest-running fan-voted awards shows in the nation. It’s viewed as a festivity of pop culture and fan favorites.

The 2024 PCAs host was Canadian actor Simu Liu, best known for his role in the Marvel movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” His energetic stage presence and ability to connect with the audience made him a perfect host for the big event. The event highlights were “Barbie” winning Movie of the Year, taking home the biggest prize, and being one of the many wins it had that night. The public’s reaction to the Barbie movie’s many wins was diverse. Many movie fans were happy with its recognition and glad their preference was mirrored in the popular vote. Some also praised the wins as an optimistic message about raising expectations and welcoming originality. The diverse reactions were fans doubting the integrity of the fan-voted awards, implying external aspects might impact outcomes. Other fans were just disappointed because they preferred the other nominees.

Another memorable night moment was when Adam Sandler was awarded the prestigious People’s Icon award by his friend Jennifer Aniston and mistook it for the People’s Sexiest Man Alive title. The audience enjoyed the light-hearted confusion, which went viral quickly. However, as soon as he realized his mistake, he transitioned smoothly to a sincere and personal speech. He thanked fans, collaborators, and family and dedicated the award to his late father. Sandler finished his speech by emphasizing the importance of chasing one’s dreams and finding joy in life, demonstrating his sincere gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him.

The TV Show of the Year award was presented to the long-running TV show, “Grey’s Anatomy.” The medical drama has existed since 2005 and has an extensive fan base. It made fans nostalgic and delighted to see the win. On the other hand, fans of other nominated shows depicted disappointment, feeling their favorites deserved the win more.

Ultimately, during the presentation of an award by the lead actors of the romantic comedy “Anyone But You,” Glen Powell, and Sydney Sweeney, a surprise performance was unveiled featuring Natasha Bedingfield. It happened because Glen Powell was “nervous,” and Sydney Sweeney started singing his character’s serenity song from the movie to calm him down. Then, the audience joined in, creating a surprising and delightful moment. To everyone’s surprise, the original artist, Natasha Bedingfield, walked onstage to complete the chorus with them. The unexpected performance became a highlight of the night, showcasing the movie and the power of fan engagement.
