Recently there have been several close-call scenarios for students driving to campus. Most of these easily avoidable accidents could be prevented by not using a cellphone while driving, not putting on makeup, or simply paying attention to the road. People who engage in these problematic activities are the reason I 95 is so dangerous. As a result of all these drivers reckless decisions, many parents are concerned to let their children drive at all.
“I see a lot of people texting and texting while paying attention going extremely slow wavering in the lane. Drivers should have their full attention on the road instead of whatever they are doing,” Jesus Uriarte Modern Languages Chair.
The drivers aren’t the only ones liable. There are many instances where a pedestrian gets hit or causes accidents by not paying attention to the light and traffic and instead on their phone or doing something else. This somehow makes the driver liable if he does hit the pedestrian or gets into an accident trying to avoid the pedestrian.
“I remember one time I was outside a restaurant on the sidewalk waiting to leave. I nearly got hit by a motorized scooter that was going insanely fast. I only managed to avoid it by quickly jumping on the thing that supports the street light,” said a senior who declined to give his name.
There other instances where drivers just have a complete lack of common sense, trying to make there cars where they are not allowed for example driving on the sidewalk or a buildings stairs. Other times they try to do something physically impossible.
“There was this one time I was just walking around my apartment with my brother and I look down the balcony of my apartment. I see a taxi trying to drive down the stairs of my building that goes to street level instead of the ramp,” said Miami Beach resident Mickey Galgano.
