The Grammys Most Memorable Moments!
April 11, 2022
A week following the Oscars and what unfolded there, we quickly found ourselves through another lengthy award ceremony: The Grammys. And although there was no slap nor bad joke about seat fillers, we did get many memorable performances and wins as well as some amusing moments. Let’s get into it!
1. BTS Hitting the Stage like ‘Criminals Undercover’
As they have proven time and time again, BTS always finds a way to shine in their appearances and performances– this was no exception. Even though they didn’t win “Best Pop Duo/Group,” they definitely had many wins left and right as they did a Bond-themed performance of “Butter” with Jungkook descending from the sky and V having a now internet viral moment with Olivia Rodrigo as they had a charming and flirty interaction.
2. SZA and Doja Cat chaotically win “Best Pop Duo”
Although BTS didn’t take this win, we are not disappointed with the ones who did. Two beautiful and talented women took up the stage in a…not so graceful way. First, we had SZA trying to make her way over to the stage with crutches and high heels yet struggled with her trail but lo and behold Lady Gaga came to the rescue. Soon enough, a running Doja Cat makes her way, throwing her vape stick to a side, and opens her acceptance speech with “Listen…I have never taken such a fast (bathroom break).” After some laughs, they both greatly appreciated the award and instead went out with style as opposed to their entrance.
3. Lady Gaga Jazzed Up the Night!
Speaking of Lady Gaga, she channeled her inner Amy Winehouse and Judy Garland as she sang her songs from her latest album with legend Tony Bennett, Love For Sale. She sang in her “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” turquoise dress as a heartfelt video montage played in the background demonstrating the year-long friendship these two shared. Mr. Bennett has unfortunately been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s last year so his best friend, Lady Gaga, made sure to dedicate the performance to him as she ended with tears in her eyes, “I love you Tonny; we miss you.”
4. Justin Bieber Still Gets His Peaches Down in Georgia
Now let me start off by saying Justin Bieber performed very well, but I was definitely not expecting to hear a slow piano rendition of “Peaches,” especially hearing “I get my Peaches out in Georgia” with a lot of soulful feeling. Yet, soon enough he got up from the piano and sang the rest of “Peaches” in its original version with its feature artists, Daniel Cesar and Giveon (pronounced as give-ee-on; a pronunciation I only learned a few days later). Although none of these artists won a Grammy, it’s safe to say their performances caught our attention.
5. Olivia Rodrigo Has Won Her First Three Grammys! ..and Broke One of Them
The 64th Grammy Awards were a big night for young 19-year-old Olivia Rodrigo taking home not one, not two, but three Grammys; all of them being her firsts. She won for best new artist, best pop vocal album for “Sour” and pop solo performance for her hit “Drivers License.” Yet after collecting all three and heading backstage to take pictures for the reporters, one of the trophies fell and broke in half. The best new artist stared down in shock but later laughed it off as it was quickly fixed. Don’t worry Olivia, Taylor Swift and Adele went through the same incident…maybe it’s a thing that just happens to successful female singers.
6. Lil Nas X Responded to his Haters in the Best Way Possible
Lil Nas X took on the stage with a medley of his most famous songs his latest album Montero but as soon as he finished performing “Dead Right Now,” he proceeded to leave the stage for the audience to see a video montage of all the controversy he faced when he came out with the “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” music video. To show he doesn’t care about this hate, he came out again to sing one of his biggest hits, “Industry Baby,” alongside artist and rapper Jack Harlow.
7. Jon Batiste, The Dark Horse of the Grammys
Jon Batiste was the most-nominated artist of the evening with 11 Grammy nominations from which he won five: album of the year, best American roots performance, best American roots song, best score soundtrack for visual media, and best music video. To top it all off, he showed what got him all those Grammy wins and nominations with a colorful, eccentric, and fun performance of his song “Freedom” that got everybody to stand up from their seats and dance!
8. Honoring Taylor Hawkins
Although the award ceremony is fun and glamorous to enjoy, it was needed to address the elephant in the room: the death of the Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins. While on their South American tour, Hawkins unexpectedly died at the age of 50. This prompted the band to cancel the rest of their following performances like their entire world tour and Grammy performances. Grammy’s host Trevor Noah addressed the loss mentioning the Foo Fighters won all three of their Grammy nominations: best rock performance for “Making a Fire,” best rock song for “Waiting on a War ” and best rock album for Medicine at Midnight. Soon they added a tribute to him in a snippet video to start off the song dedication of all the artists we lost this past year. Yet this was not the only tribute that Tony Hawkins got as Billie Eilish wore a shirt with his face on It as she went up to her perform her Grammy-nominated song.
9. Billie Eilish and FINNEAS Didn’t Make it Rain, They Made it Pour
Billie Eilish and FINNEAs gave us a powerful and raw performance of their hit “Happier Than Ever” The song was nominated for seven Grammys this year including record and song of the year, as well as best pop solo performance and best music video. They brought the house down as they rocked out together with pouring rain and lights all over the stage. As previously mentioned, Taylor Hawkins received another tribute and that was in the shape and form of Billie Eilish wearing a shirt with Taylor Hawkin’s face on it. It was a small but meaningful message in a powerful song and performance.
10. Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion Repeat History
While presenting the Grammy for best new artist, these two female artists recreated an iconic moment in pop culture history between Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. Dua Lipa and Megan stepped onto the stage in the same black and gold outfit designed by Donatella Versace. Megan says “You stole my look!” to which Dua responded, “Well, I was told I had the exclusive.” They both look towards Donatella Versace to solve the issue to which she promptly pulls off both their skirts to reveal different versions of the same dress. The same thing that Carey and Houston did!
11. H.E.R., Travis Barker, and Lenny Kravitz Rocked The Grammys
The unlikely trio brought the house down with some rockstar energy on the Grammys stage in a medley of “We Made It,” “Damage,” and Kravitz’s legendary “Are You Gonna Go My Way” with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. We got to see H.E.R. show off her guitar skills, Travis Barker completely obliterate the drums in his solos, and Lenny Kravitz singing at full force with his raspy voice as he knocked down his microphone with a kick.
12. Silk Sonic, The 70s Icons We Didn’t Know We Needed
Anderson Paak and Bruno Mars may not have taken all the awards but they sure did take home some of the most coveted statues for best R&B performance, best R&B song, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. “We are really trying our hardest to remain humble at this point, but in the industry, we call that a clean sweep,” Paak said while accepting Record of the Year.
From their funky and bright performance of “777” to their amusing and groovy way of accepting the awards, this super duo went on to prove they were able to bring back the 70s in the smoothest way possible. So trust me, you’re going to want to watch how they accepted their Record of the Year award.
And that concludes the 64th Annual Grammys that left us with tunes and moments to remember. We were given some funny, weird, and moving moments throughout the ceremony and may I say…they were a bit more fun than the Oscars. So the only question left is…are you ready for the Emmys?
