The 2026 FIFA World Cup will begin in less than three weeks, and excitement is sky high. Hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the tournament will bring together 48 teams for the first time ever. More cities, more fans, and more matches should create a month full of energy and nonstop football.
Defending champions Argentina national football team will arrive with pressure on them again, while countries like France, England, Brazil, and Spain are expected to be among the favorites. Young stars are likely to take center stage such as Lamine Yamal and Desire Doue, while experienced players will try to leave one final mark on the biggest tournament in the sport, such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The atmosphere should also be unique. Matches will be played in massive stadiums across North America, from historic football cities in Mexico to packed American arenas and passionate Canadian crowds, including games in Miami. Millions of fans are expected to travel, making it one of the largest sporting events ever held.
Sophomore Luca Drago, who is very excited for the World Cup, said “I’m so excited for this year’s edition since I am going to a lot of the games. Also, since I’m Mexican I will go to Mexico to see some of their games.”
Another sophomore Diego de Teran said, “I hope France win since I’m half French, and I’ve been waiting four years for this tournament, hoping they win it after losing in the final in 2022.”
Tenth grader Isabela Dimond said, “I’m not really a big fan of soccer but the atmosphere leading up to the World Cup is very exciting and I’ll try to be aware with the games and what is happening.”
For the United States especially, this World Cup feels important. Soccer continues to grow in popularity, and hosting the tournament again could push the sport even further into the mainstream. With bigger crowds, higher expectations, and more global attention than ever, the 2026 World Cup already feels like a tournament that could be remembered for a long time.
