Marquina and Medina Represent ILS Girls Volleyball On All-Dade Teams
February 18, 2021
The Miami Herald announced their Fall 2020 All-Dade teams on Wednesday, and amongst the best volleyball players in the county were two Lady Royal Lions.
Junior Helena Marquina was named a second-team selection, and senior Adriana Medina received honorable mention honors.
Marquina was ILS’s firepower on offense last season, as her 72 kills was a team-high. She also notched 20 solo blocks and 45 triple blocks, which was the most at ILS.
”Being recognized for my dedication and work towards my improvement in volleyball is always a great feeling,” Marquina said. I’d like to thank my coaches for pushing me everyday at practice and helping me throughout all my seasons at ILS.”
Marquina, who’s 6-foot-3, looks to continue causing trouble for opposing team’s once again next season. And she’s keeping her expectations high.
”My personal goal for next year is definitely to be named to the All-Dade first team,” she said. “It’s been a goal I’ve set since my sophomore year, and I know I can do it if I improve my connection with my setters and work on my weaknesses.”
The Royal Lions, which finished 8-3 last season and captured the Class 4A District 15 title, relied heavily on Medina, their captain. She led ILS in assists (107), and was second on the team in aces (18) and third in digs (52).
“Receiving this honor means a lot to me,” Medina said. “I feel, good about my performance this season. We made the bets out of it, given it was short and different because of COVID.”
Medina, who transferred to ILS as a sophomore, registered 736 assists, 202 digs, 98 aces and 14 kills throughout the span of her three-year career.
“I would like to thank my first coach Odette, coach [Maria] Cuesta, coach Melissa, coach Andres [Saladrigas] and most of all coach Danny [Saladrigas],” Medina said. “Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
