Did TikTok Rig The Grammys?
February 16, 2023
The 65th Grammy Award show took place February 5, 2023 and were once again a bit controversial to say the least. Many feel like some of the artists who won did not deserve to take home a win; others just weren’t raving about the award show like other years prior. Most of all, people noticed a pattern of how most of the songs being nominated were famous on TikTok. TikTok is the most popular app amongst teens at the moment as well as new young artists who produce their music to grow their careers. This not only happens for the new artists, but the old ones as well.
The most controversial win of the night were the winners for the best pop duo/ group performance, Sam Smith and Kim Petras. Their song, “Unholy,” blew up on TikTok this year, but it comes with a controversial meaning. “Unholy” touches base on some hot button topics as did their performance which displayed acts many dismayed viewers categorized as examples of satanism. Many felt that that specific offensive performance took away a win from other nominees, and should have merely remained as a TikTok phenomenon.
For Album of the Year ,Harry Styles took the win for Harry’s House. Overall, I liked the album, but I agree with the viewers in the sense that it did not deserve a Grammy. Harry Styles is an amazing artist, but there were many other albums nominated that were better. Harry’s House had a couple songs which blew up on TikTok that were nothing out of this world. This album proved just how easily TikTok can influence a win like this.
Lastly, Lizzo won Record of the Year for her song “About Damn Time.” I think this song really screams TikTok, but at the same time it portrays a strong message of positivity and feeling good. Lizzo is a great artist and has songs that make girls feel comfortable and secure. This song was initially popular because of TikTok, but I do think that Lizzo deserved this win. The song is very catchy and comes with a positive message.
The Grammy’s were not as interesting as they used to be, andTikTok is turning very mediocre songs, into Grammy-level songs. It’s safe to say that the award show is not at all how it used to be. TikTok has completely changed people’s perspective on music which is good for small artists trying to blow up, but not for Grammy-worthy music.
