One of the key reasons for running for office for the Student Government Association (SGA) is to examine and develop leadership skills. With the help of SGA, students derive a greater awareness of who they are and their ability to lead. They also learn the value of leadership in a modern democratic society, and get ready to take on leadership responsibilities at their schools and communities. SGA leaders at ILS are students who are proud representatives of  the diverse student body who encourage everyone to take pride in the school and community, and maintain school spirit. Students who are part of SGA learn how to work together, be optimistic, and maintain an eagerness to go to great lengths for any activities, such as spirit weeks, homecoming, or community service at the same time setting a good example for classmates.

As the approach of a new school year has arrived, the class of 2026 has become a part of the ILS family and they are gearing up to vote their own SGA into office.  Elections will take place this coming September 16th. Freshmen running for office will have the opportunity to get their names heard during campaign week, which will be happening from September 12th-16th. As of the end of the school day September 7, there were a total of seven candidates running for various positions. There are three candidates for President, two for Vice-President, and two running for Secretary.

The candidates are eager to get their message out.

Running for Vice President, one candidate noted she is dedicated and is willing to put in the time and listen to others’ ideas, two very important traits for a person in public office.  A candidate for Secretary expressed her understanding that since ILS students come from different places and have a different perspectives, if elected, she will make it her mission to listen to what everyone has to say to make this school the most enjoyable for everyone. Another candidate for Secretary, lives by the motto of “practice what you preach” and hopes to lead by example.

The freshmen class will have tough decisions to make in electing their representatives, as they are all very capable individuals who hope to make a difference in the community. Best of luck to all running for office.
