Starting in late January and running through mid-March the Legendary Legion—aka the ILS Lacrosse team, has its season, playing around 20 games against other schools.  In order to be in top form, they train every day after school. Mr. John Ierardi, marine biology teacher, and Mr. Jose Companioni, math teacher, are the team coaches. Rumor has it that they “live and breathe the sport,” having coached lacrosse for several jubilant years, and leading the team with passion and dedication.  In doing so, they carry on the legacy started in 2008 by Mr. Neil Kjeldsen, English teacher, when he started the team. But lacrosse has been around much longer than that. In fact, the origins of the game date back to the twelfth century in North America when members of the Six Nations played a game called baggataway.  Back then, teams could be composed of as many as a thousand players on each side and they faced off as far as several miles from each other in matches that could last up to three days. Today, the game is fast-moving and resembles basketball.

I joined the lacrosse team late this year and had a blast

— Senior Sebastian Debora

Sebastian’s first taste of lacrosse came in his sophomore year. After falling in love with the sport, he had to take a temporary hiatus  Although Sebastian was a late addition, he has truly been a team player working tirelessly to bolster the group.  Sebastian asserts that the star player of the team is definitely the captain,  senior Lucas Brena.

“I am not on the lacrosse team, but I have always loved going to their games,” said senior Gabriella Costa.

There are many lacrosse lovers in the ILS realm. The energy coming from the players transfers to the crowd and it is all simply enthralling. Fans watch matches in the new ILS stands, cheering wildly as the players exhibit their skills with finesse and power. The camaraderie among the players is palpable, evident in every pass, every goal scored, and every triumphant celebration that echoes across the field.  If you haven’t gone to a match yet, hope to see you at one soon!
