Anxiety is a common thing, but sports are a great way to release it. Sports help you manage stress. Exercise causes your body to release endorphins, the chemicals in your brain that relieve pain and stress. It also reduces the levels of stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline. Studies have shown that 20 to 30 minutes of exercise each day can make people feel calmer.
Endorphins are natural brain chemicals that can improve your sense of well-being. Taking your mind off worries.
“My anxiety can spike, but every time I play volleyball it relaxes me so much. It brings me peace,” said sophomore Emma Angeli.
Engaging in sports can induce a state of mindfulness or “flow,” where people totally commit to the activity, resulting in less anxiety and improved performance. When people are challenged at their ideal level, their task complexity is matched to their ability level and their condition gets better.
Engaging in physical activity through sports helps to relieve physical tension in the body, which is often associated with stress and anxiety.
“I love soccer so much and every time I’m on the field, yes ,it can be tough, but overall it relaxes me so much because it’s my passion and I enjoy it,” said sophomore Alessandra Alvarez.
Additionally, sports can improve cognitive function, which helps reduce anxiety. Participating in sports activities that require strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making might enhance cognitive function and serve as a diversion from nervous thoughts.
“Anxiety is an issue for a lot of teens, but since I play a sport, it’s a great way to release it and I enjoy it every time I play soccer,” said Javiera Escobar.
