This past Friday and Saturday, the ILS Debate Team competed virtually at the district qualifiers for the NSDA (National Speech and Debate Association) National Championship.

The NSDA is an honor society, which means that only team members apart of the society can join.

Junior, Delia Sauer is going to represent ILS at the National Speech and Debate Championship in Original Oratory. Junior, Sophia Mena also is the 2nd alternate qualifier in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

“My favorite part of this weekend was being able to celebrate the wins of the team,” said junior Isabel Trespalacio.

The team is now starting to prepare to compete for a spot at the National Catholic Forensic League Championship Tournament which will be held on March 16.

“Those are the two national level leagues that we compete in, and each one has it’s own championship tournament,” said the Debate team moderator, Mr. JC Moya.

The Debate team is now starting to prep by holding Zoom meetings and practicing rounds with each other. Beforehand, they were practicing socially distanced at school and by Zoom meetings although this has not effected them too much.

“As we say on the debate team, I am looking forward to kicking off and breaking negs,” said  Trespalcio.

To provide context, aff means affirmative side and neg means negotiation side.

Congrats to the Debate team and good luck at your next competition!
