A couple of days ago, a few students returned from a trip to New York City, along with Sr. Katie Flanagan, FMA and Mr. Nicholas Shaheen. They were sent as representatives of Immaculata-La Salle in a ‘Salesian Leadership Retreat’ (SLR). In order to be selected for such a trip, the Salesian Youth Ministry advises schools to specifically elect students who have goals for their school or parishes, and take initiatives on achieving those goals.

The everyday program of this event mainly consisted of journaling, discussions, prayer, personal witness, and more physically active activities. This is why it can be said that the retreat was not just about strengthening participants’ relationship and faith with God; it was also about improving their relationships with themselves and who they are. Participants learn leadership skills, self-assurance, and simply a new way of looking at themselves and others.

“The relationship that I built with the other participants and chaperones is something that I will forever cherish. Our group just automatically clicked. Of course we had our emotional moments, but we were all there to support each other in any way that we needed,” expressed junior Megan Dominguez.

There are some consequences to being a full week away from family and a week’s worth of school to make up. Though it is still strongly advised to attend as in the end, it is a lifetime opportunity that students only get to live out once.

“I had my doubts, too about attending, though now I am forever grateful for taking part in the SLR,” added Dominguez.

Additionally, along with making new friendships and connections with people from all across the United States, participants develop relationships with the students from ILS who traveled with them. Even though they’re only there for a few days, they develop a special and intimate bond with the individuals there because everyone is always interacting and communicating with one another.

“I really didn’t know what SLR was prior to being invited, but I could definitely say this trip changed my life.”
