One of the most trending social media apps today where people can connect globally is TikTok.

Social media often stands at the crosswords of criticism and praise in the world today with the abundance of circulating social media platforms that are easily accessible to every age group. On the surface level of social media, each new wave of apps is a fresh way to communicate and connect with different people everywhere, but there are so many more benefits that may be overshadowed by the negatives.

  1. Global Activism:

Social media has become a powerful tool for global activism and promoting social causes. Political movements like #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, and climate activism gained immense momentum through social platforms, providing a voice to the marginalized and sparking real-world change. Because of social media’s accessibility, it has the ability to unite people across geographical boundaries, making the world a more socially conscious place.

Not only is social media a way to stay updated on what is happening worldwide, but you can also keep track of what is happening in your own communities.

Senior Daniela Aguila uses these platforms to her advantage.

“There are accounts on Instagram, like KB Islander News, that keep us updated on what is happening in Key Biscayne. They post things happening in the Key, like garage sales and other current events in the area, and accounts like this can be really helpful because they are very accessible to all,” she explained.

Key Biscayne is not the only area with platforms like this. There are websites and groups to join to connect and stay updated in your community.

  1. Mental Health Support:

Contrary to the belief that social media only contributes to creating adverse mental health issues, these platforms also serve as vital support networks. Online communities and groups provide a safe space for individuals facing various challenges, offering empathy, advice, and a sense of belonging. From mental health awareness campaigns to platforms like Reddit fostering supportive communities, social media can be a lifeline for those in need.

  1. Educational Resources and Networking:

Oftentimes, many think of social media, apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat as the first to pop into their minds. However, the educational landscape has been revolutionized by the accessibility of information on other social media platforms like Twitter (now known as X) and LinkedIn, which serve as hubs for professionals to share insights, discuss industry trends, and network globally. Educational content, from webinars to tutorial videos, have democratized learning, enabling individuals to acquire knowledge outside ordinary institutions.

Small businesses use social media to develop their brand and attract customers with advertising.

“I have an Instagram account for my baking business, called Tate’s Treats, where I make homemade treats like lemon pie, s’mores brownies, and fruit cakes and post them on my Instagram. Customers can send me a message through Instagram to place an order. It makes it easier to grow my business and find new customers,” said senior Delfi Pellegrini.

  1. Cultural Exchange and Understanding:

Social media acts as a bridge for cultural exchange, fostering understanding and breaking down stereotypes. With its visual storytelling, platforms like Instagram allow users to share aspects of their cultures, traditions, and daily lives, fostering a more interconnected global society.

For most people, it serves as a way to keep in contact with people in your life who you don’t see often. Senior Alana Salazar values this aspect.

“This summer, I completed a business program in Spain where I met so many different people from different countries, so when I came back to Miami, I was able to stay connected with friends from all the way in places like Brazil. I love to know they are doing well, and being able to keep in touch with them has helped me maintain lifelong friendships,” said Alana.

While social media has its negative aspects, it remains an integral part of the world, constantly evolving to reflect societal changes. Embracing and adapting to social media could help people appreciate the positive impacts it offers.
