ILS Baseball Picks Up First Win of the Season
February 21, 2020
On Thursday evening, the ILS Royal Lions baseball team hosted the Coral Shores Hurricanes at Saint Thomas University for their first “home” game of the season. The Royal Lions defeated Coral Shores 14-4 to pick up their first regular season win of 2020.
Senior Zach Barrios started the game for the baseball team and pitched four innings. Barrios struck out seven in his season debut. It was an impressive outing from Barrios, especially considering his recent shoulder injury. He showed no ill-affects from a pitching perspective, but he’s still not able to hit because of the injury.
The offense bounced back after scoring only three runs in the season opener versus Killian. That 8-3 loss earlier in the week helped show the Royal Lions what they needed to improve, and they did so against Coral Shores.
Junior Elimir Perez led ILS with four RBI. He hit a pair of doubles in the game. Junior Dominic Sorondo followed up his two-hit season debut versus Killian with another solid effort at the plate. Sorondo had a double and two RBI.
Seniors Carlos Herrera and Daniel Reyes each had a hit and a RBI for the Royal Lions in this one.
The team has struggled with injuries early in the season and they’ve been without some of the leaders, like Damien Sorondo and Damian Carames. Senior pitcher Max Guillen hasn’t taken the mound yet, although he has been hitting.
The next game for the baseball team will be today (Friday) at Palmer Trinity. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
