Just as the county and the city, ILS is committed to a recycling program.

Dr. Rebecca Shaw, Contributing Writer

💚 Greetings, ILS Family 💚

Did you know that Nov. 15 is National Recycling Day?

As such, it is the perfect day to relaunch our “ILS Recycles” Initiative!

During E Block that day,  you may have received a visit to check and see your classroom has the proper recycling receptacles.

ILS recently purchased large blue recycling bins to be placed in some of the hallways. At this time, the plan is to have F Block teachers (or assign a student) to place your classroom’s small blue recycling bin in the hallway outside of the room during each F Block, during which Environmental Club members will come by to empty the small bins into the larger hallway bins, checking to make sure that only the appropriate items are being recycled.

As part of the Nov. 15 kick-off, during F Block, students watched a short video  about what can and can’t be place in the recycling bins on campus.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:

  1. Please make sure you have the proper blue recycling bin in your classroom. (If you are missing one, please let Dr. Rebecca Shaw know!)
  2. Watch the video students.
  3. Discuss items that can/cannot be recycled. (If there are any questions, please contact Dr. Shaw).

FOR UPCOMING F BLOCKS:

  1. Place classroom blue bin in the hallway for Environmental Club members to pick up.
  2. Bring classroom blue bin back in at the end of the Block.

Ways you can help support this initiative:

  1. Encourage EVERYONE to recycle!
  2. Remind students what can and can’t be placed in the classroom recycling bins. (The Simple 5 is listed below, as well as what cannot be recycled.)

THE SIMPLE FIVE (Items need to be clean and free of food and debris to be accepted.)

  • Paper products: newspapers, magazines, catalogs, telephone books, printer paper, copier paper, mail and all other office paper without wax liners
  • Cardboard: packing boxes, cereal boxes, gift boxes and corrugated cardboard. Flatten boxes before placing in the bin
  • Cans: steel and aluminum food & beverage cans; aluminum bottles are also accepted
  • Cartons: aseptic poly-coated drink boxes, juice cartons and milk cartons
  • Bottles: (plastic & glass) – plastic bottles: milk, water, detergent, soda and shampoo (flatten and replace cap); glass bottles

NOT RECYCLABLE

  • Plastic bags: do not place recyclables in plastic bags or place loose plastic bags in the recycling bin
  • Pizza boxes
  • Paper or cardboard soiled with liquid or food waste
  • Batteries
  • Certain plastics: plastic bags, food wrappers, cups, utensils and plates, clamshell containers, polystyrene (foam) products, egg cartons and trays, margarine and butter tubs, yogurt cups
 A few things to note:
  • The paper coffee cups are not recyclable. Especially if they still have coffee in them!
  • All items placed in the recycling bin should be clean of food and liquids.
  • Please review the list below and only place approved items in the recycling bins
    • We do get fined by the recycling company for unapproved items :/
My suggestion is, WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT.. in the trash.

Thank you for your support!
