This slogan reminds everyone of the the true meaning behind the celebration of Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is the time of year when everyone looks around to notice everything there is to be are thankful for. It’s also a time of year when anyone can give back to their community.

Away ILS does this is by having the Wishbone Project. This project is where ILS students fill a box with groceries and other things for families to be able to celebrate Thanksgiving. Wishbone is mainly planned and prepared by the NHS, the National Honor Society.

“I had heard about the Wishbone Project by friends in NHS. I really love it, I love helping people be able to celebrate Thanksgiving by giving them food to put on the table.”

— Senior Jasmine Finley

Many students expressed that they loved helping people and that the Wishbone Project was one of the best ways to do so. Being that it is officially the holiday season, it is the time to lift people’s spirits and give back. Students also mentioned that they love how involved everyone becomes when it comes to Wishbone. It isn’t just some people as the entire school joins in to help.

For instance, each department, from Math to Science to World Languages and more, encourage their members to bring assorted items from a list which includes rice, beans, potatoes, sugar, and flour. Everyone who donates then places the items on the stage in the Bayshore Ballroom. There student volunteers sort the items in individual boxes which are given to selected needy families through the Archdiocese of Miami.

“I especially love seeing people’s faces light up when we give them the boxes,” recalled senior Ines Unda excitedly.

Helping people is something everyone should do and Wishbone is a great way to do so.

The Wishbone Project was started by a past ILS teacher, Mrs. Maria Garcia, who unfortunately passed away due to cancer. ILS took it upon themselves to continue her legacy and to encourage their students to help others who are less fortunate.
