Grocery bills are getting higher around the world, leaving many struggling to afford basic necessities. Higher food prices have become a big issue as inflation, supply chain problems, and extreme weather impact production and distribution.
In the United States, normal items such as eggs, bread, and milk have increased in price over the past year. For many families, this means having to make choices about what to buy.
“I used to be able to fill my cart with whatever I wanted and it would still be a reasonable price,” said junior Jillian Martinez. “Now I have to check the price of everything and sometimes put things back.”
Experts say the issue is not in just one country as around the world farmers are facing problems like droughts, floods, and an increase in fuel prices, factors which have lead to them having to spend more money, and in return they raise their prices. In some areas, these problems are even rougher, leading to people not having enough food food. According to economists, global supply chains are still trying to recover from issues caused by recent global troubles, which continues to affect availability.
Students are also noticing this issue at home. “My family doesn’t eat out anymore like we used to,” said junior Sophie Yetming.
“
Communities and organizations are stepping in to try help those in need. Food banks and donation drives have been in demand as more families need help and turn to them for support. Volunteers say they are serving a lot of people who have never needed assistance before.
“I’ve noticed a big increase in the number of visitors whom I’ve never seen before,” said junior Camila Echeverri. “People who used to donate are now asking for help, which shows how the problem has become too big to control.”

As food prices continue to rise, families around the world are trying to adjust their habits and find new ways to make do. For many, the simple process of grocery shopping has become a balance between need and affordability instead of what they want.
