Last Wednesday, the ILS Royal Lions softball team overwhelmed the host Monsignor Pace Spartans by a margin of 18-13.

This back-and-forth contest, ILS found themselves down by a run after three innings. Pace continued to push their lead in the six inning, but ILS responded in the seventh inning in resounding fashion. The Lady Royal Lions plated nine runs in this comeback effort.

A grand slam home run by freshman Ashley Fonseca in the seventh capped the scoring. Other notable offense came from sophomore Sofia Lopez who had three hits on the night. Junior Sophia Hidalgo also contributed with three hits for the Lady Royal Lions.

Senior Maia Medina continued her great season with another solid effort on the mound. Medina racked up 13 strikeouts for ILS en route to her second win of the season.

“It was almost like a chain reaction,” said Medina.

This win comes after a string of difficult games and the team knew they needed to respond.

Medina, one of the team’s leaders as a senior, said: “The team just needs to gain confidence in themselves and realize that they know what to do. We need to start becoming more confident in our performances and as our Coach says, ‘Be fierce’.”

This comeback effort against Pace certainly demonstrated that “Be fierce” approach.

“It was an exciting game that required a real team effort late in the game to bring it home!” said ILS Athletic Director Nick Fernandez. “We are exceedingly proud of the team!”

With the win, ILS moves its record to 2-4 on the year. The Lady Royal Lions host Coral Shores (Tavernier, FL) on Friday, March 12. The Hurricanes come into the contest with a record of 1-2. Coral Shores lost 8-6 in their recent non-league contest against Palmer Trinity.
