Join the Environmental Club for their regular bay clean ups. Part of the work and the fun includes taking the kayaks out on the bay.

ILS’s Environmental Club is a group of students whose mission is to make the campus more eco-friendly. These eco-warriors regularly organize beach clean-ups, fundraise for environmental causes, and much more.  Club president, senior Sofia Iovine, has always loved nature and feels it is her duty to help make it cleaner for the future.

“I remember going to Pinecrest Gardens as a kid and admiring the beauty there,” recalled Sofia.

Joining the Environmental Club has also served as a teaching tool members and anyone who participates in their activities such as the on campus bay clean up,  better ways to dispose of items, what reusable products are available for purchase, and other ways to create a more eco-friendly environmental footprint in the local landscape.

“Since joining I have learned to repurpose things I no longer use and to reduce my spending.”

There are many eco-friendly products out there, like reusable water bottles, reusable makeup wipes, etc. Not only do many sometimes mindlessly throw away some items, by increasing the level of public consciousness, club members hope adherents will use items more, longer, help prevent pollution, save energy, and ultimately, reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“I started using reusable makeup pads last year. Not only do they last much longer, I feel like they even work better,”  said senior Monica Pietro.

The ILS Environmental Club is also a great way to make new friends. Many members have mentioned meeting their best friends at the club. Not only is it for a good cause, participants can have a lot of fun, especially because club members and participants go out on the water during many clean-ups.

“My favorite things about the club are helping the earth and being able to use the kayaks,” said Syrenay Ow.

These ILS eco-warriors take pride in helping their school be cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
