Every year, on the first Monday of May, celebrities, designers, athletes, and artists gather in New York City for one of the most talked-about events in fashion: the Met Gala. Known for its dramatic red carpet looks and star-studded guest list, the event has grown into a major cultural moment that captures attention across social media and news outlets worldwide. But the Met Gala was not always the global spectacle it is today.
The event began in 1948 as a fundraiser for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In its early years, the gala was a formal dinner attended mainly by members of New York society. Over time, it evolved into a larger celebration of fashion, art, and creativity.
Much of the Met Gala’s modern popularity is linked to Anna Wintour, former Vogue editor and the inspiration behind the Amanda Priestly character from the book/film, The Devil Wears Prada, who became chair of the event in 1995. Under her leadership, the gala transformed into an exclusive invitation-only event featuring celebrities, designers, and influential public figures. Themes such as “Camp,” “Heavenly Bodies,” and “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” encouraged guests to create bold looks inspired by art and fashion history.
Today, the Met Gala is often called “fashion’s biggest night” because it blends style, celebrity culture, and artistic expression. Millions of people follow the event online, discussing outfits, favorite looks, and standout moments. Platforms like social media have helped introduce the gala to younger audiences, many of whom may never have followed high fashion otherwise.
This year, the Met Gala will take place on Monday, May 4, 2026. The dress code is “Fashion is Art” to celebrate the “Costume Art” exhibition. This year’s Co-Chairs are Anna Wintour, Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams.
Sophomore, Myah Taher said, “I don’t usually follow fashion, but the Met Gala is fun to watch because everyone goes all out with the theme and people post about it everywhere.”
Without a doubt, one of the main reasons that the Met Gala has become so popular is because of social media. For students, the Met Gala can be entertaining because it feels like more than just a red carpet event. It gives viewers a chance to see creativity, confidence, and individuality on display.
Sophomore Gabriela Rodriguez, said, “I think it’s become so popular because everyone posts the outfits online and people love ranking them.”
Although it remains a fundraiser at its core, the Met Gala has become much more than a charity event. From its modest beginnings to its current global spotlight, it continues to show how fashion can become a form of art and how one night each year can capture the world’s attention
