The Sailing Report
ILS Sailing competed at the final District Qualifier Regatta for the Mallory National Championship Trophy this past weekend. This regatta was limited to the top 16 schools in both the South and North Districts of SAISA for the final regatta of the regular season. The regatta was raced in 420 sailboats – two-person sailboats requiring skipper and crew. Charleston Community Sailing was the host and Carolina Yacht Club provided the venue.
The event was delayed on shore until a sea breeze filled from the East shifting to southeast – with a light to medium breeze throughout the day.
ILS Sailing fielded a Varsity team – Beck Brill (’27) skippering with Luis Flores (’29) crewing in varsity A division in all races. A disappointing last race saw them drop from 4th to 6th in their division. B division saw Isabella Henrich (’26), Leo Terzani (’27) and Marina Wardlaw all sharing skippering duties in B division with Alejandro Escudero (’27), Arturo de la Rosa (‘27), and Mia Noritake (’29) sharing crewing duties in B division. The wind varied from 3-5 knots up to 10-11 knots throughout the days for a variety of conditions. Strong current marks this venue which sees three rivers converge before entering the Atlantic.
The Royal Lions demonstrated strong teamwork and conducted themselves well in the competition with all sailors playing a role on the racecourse. Although we had some standout moments, with A division having several strong sets in the top three and winning two of their 9 races, B division sailed well but struggled to reach their full potential and the team finished 9th of 16 teams.
