What would be the effects if the most popular apps teens use suddenly vanished?
That question has become more real as concerns over data privacy and ties to ByteDance has caused governments debate whether to restrict the use of TikTok.While officials present argument’ about national security and user data, teens all across the world are wondering how this ban could change in their lives.
For many students, TikTok is a part of their routine.
“I spend like two hours a day on it without even noticing,” said ILS junior Ashley Gomez.
Others see the app as a source of information and creativity.
“I actually learn a lot from TikTok,” ILS junior Jillian Martinez said. “Study tips, news, and fitness stuff. It’s not just dances anymore.”
However, not everyone agrees that the app should stay. Some argue that concerns about privacy are well founded.
“I think people underestimate how much data apps collect,” ILS junior Zoe Pazos said. “If there’s a risk, then maybe banning it makes sense.”
The debate has also reached schools, where teachers are noticing how much the app is used in student life. Some educators worry that it causes distractions in class and makes students lose focus and waste time. A ban would likely not end short video content altogether, since other platforms like Instagram and YouTube already offer similar features. However, TikTok’s algorithm and cultural influence make it the main app for this type of content.
As debates continue, teens are caught in the middle of a political and technological debate. Whether TikTok stays or goes, it has already changed how many consume content, and that impact is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
These debates have already been going on for years and many times in the past there have been threats to ban the app, leaving many questioning whether the app will ever get banned or if this debate is a waste of everyone’s time.
